CFA firefighters from the Dixons Creek chapter recently joined acting Premier Rob Hulls and Water Minister Tim Holding at the pipe to launch publicly water hydrants that have been installed along the pipe to assist fire-fighting.
While most people in the region consider the hydrants to be a positive initiative, the pipe remains deeply unpopular in many communities north of Melbourne.
Some CFA members have expressed concern the launch looked too much like a political endorsement for the pipe.
