EVELYN state Liberal MP Christine Fyffe has called for serious consideration into the introduction of double demerit points for speeding drivers over public holiday periods.
Ms Fyffe said she would ask the government to look at the introduction of double demerit points for traffic infringements, following the fatal accidents on Victorian roads during the Melbourne Cup long weekend.
“Having a driver’s licence is a privilege and the threat of losing it through increasing points lost must be seriously looked at,’’ Ms Fyffe said.

Speed is just one factor in fatal collisions.
What about the state of our roads, the state of vehicles and the state of the driver.
I believe that these other factors are equally important. Doubling demerit points, in my opinion, only increase the number of disqualified drivers on our roads.
In my 40 years of driving I have never had my licence checked! Mario Galteri
