Population debate: Melbourne bursting at the seams

  • From: Herald Sun

  • THE State Government has challenged resident action groups to come up with answers on where to house Melbourne's rapidly growing population.
Planning Minister Matthew Guy said that some groups opposed higher-density development in the inner city while others wanted to stop housing expansion on the urban fringe.
"We have to have a sensible, rational debate about how we grow the city and I think it's a challenge for all Melburnians to have that debate about how the city grows but how we maintain urban character in defined areas," he said.

Tell us your suggestions about dealing with Melbourne's growing population below

Coldstream residents have officially "voted" to get the UGB expanded via a Shire survey. However, the councilors have ignored their democratic right and have "gagged" all talk on expansion of the UGB in the Shire of Yarra Ranges.
Coldstream could easily double in size without extra schools or shopping centers.
The Coldstream rail station could also be reopened as a park and drive from the surrounding townships.
