Yarra Ranges Council backs state over planning reforms
YARRA Ranges Council has welcomed the State Government’s new planning-zone reforms.
The reforms package, announced last Wednesday, features three new
residential zones — residential growth zone, general residential zone,
and neighbourhood residential zone.
Planning Minister Matthew Guy said the new neighbourhood
residential zone could be adopted by councils to protect amenities of
suburbs and towns.

We would like to congratulate the Minister for Planning Matthew Guy and the State Government for introducing the proposed new planning changes which if implemented as shown, will go part of the way to repairing the 40 years of suffering and loss of income endured from the loss of our GWZ land rights and these new amendments will encourage a whole new range of tourist opportunities to flourish and also permit tractor owners to build barns without having to get planning permits to spend money. One North Wandin Farm owner had to wait 2 years to get a carport approved, a disgrace and a total misuse and abuse of the planning process.
The former Loopy element in the Hamer Liberal Government introduced the Green Wedge Zones during the 1970’s and it’s been a long time coming for the Liberals to fess up to their socialistic leaning mistakes of those days by now permitting agricultural use on Green Wedge Zoned land and removing many other Planning Permits requirements, but still don’t go far enough as we will still need a permit for more than 2- 5 animals and additional BCA building permits for the accommodation of more than 3 people in established farmers family homes for fruit pickers who cant afford to pay nightly B & B or motel tariffs. To make matters much worse, the Yarra Ranges Building Compliance dept recently sent an Order to another GWZ land owner claiming they could not house any fruit pickers, just the farmers family, otherwise they would have to change the home to a Class 1b building by getting another building permit and new occupancy permit for their already established home of 40 years.. This state of affairs can only continue to have serious long term consequences for farmers when touring fruit pickers need to sleep in their cars or pitch tents on crown land because of the beauracratic intepretations of both building and Planning laws.
We urge the Planning Minister to more closely scrutinise the 'expert' advice offered by planners more deeply, so the government can have all the facts and set it right by the implementation date, as I’m sure the inner Melbourne suburbs cannot cope with more multi-level apartments to house our fast growing population which also include thousands of illegal immigrants pouring in every month. Ironically the Greens Party supports the new illegals coming in without a visa, yet won’t agree to the building of more multi-storey inner city apartments or for more people to be accommodated in GWZ areas. Very puzzling and illogical in our opinion.
