Developers urge action on urban-fringe levy bill

VICTORIA'S property industry has called on the Brumby Government and the Opposition to settle their differences over Labor's proposed fringe development levy, warning that home affordability will suffer if more land is not opened for housing.

Developer Delfin Lend Lease yesterday said it was clear Melbourne was suffering from a land shortage, and called for a political compromise over the infrastructure levy applying to new housing in fringe areas.

PLANS to open Melbourne's urban fringe for 150,000 new households appear doomed for the forseeable future, after the State Government and the Opposition failed to agree on a proposed development tax crucial to the city's expansion.
