Fires: Message from the State Government

Hi everyone,

The State Government has asked all municipalities to be on standby for the next two days due to the extreme weather conditions predicted. This means that the Municipal Emergency Coordination Centre and Relief centres are also on standby, along with emergency management staff and response staff.

The concern for Banyule is about the extreme winds which are likely to peak in the Melbourne Metro area after lunch tomorrow. Please be assured that all relevant Council staff who will be involved in the response have been notified and planning is underway.

You may have also noticed that Telstra has sent SMS messages to over two million customers this afternoon on behalf of Victoria police, warning people of the extreme weather risk.

Please exercise commonsense when planning your activities in the next 24 hours or so and don't make unnecessary trips during the storm. Managers and supervisors may wish to revise their staff work schedules.

In the event that people are displaced as a result of the weather, a relief centre will be opened, but please encourage people to seek shelter with family and friends as first option.
