Mr Lenders on the Henry Report FSL

VICTORIA WELCOMES STRONGER FAIRER TAX SYSTEM

Mr Lenders said the Brumby Labor Government welcomed the reduction of company tax and the tax relief for small businesses.

He said Brumby Labor Government remained committed to reforming State taxes in partnership with the Commonwealth as long as Victoria’s financial sustainability and independence was not reduced. 

Mr Lenders noted the recommendations on abolishing insurance taxes, including the fire services levy. The Government is currently conducting a review of fire services funding, as announced in the Green Paper released in October 2009, which will consider the future of the fire services levy and whether there were other ways to fund the state’s fire fighting services. As the Henry report concedes any move to abolish insurance levies and taxes (including the fire service levy) would require access to a fair replacement revenue base to ensure State financial positions were not compromised.
