HAVE YOUR SAY: Wedge will stay - Local News - News - Mornington Peninsula Leader

MORNINGTON Peninsula Shire has rebuffed an offer from Planning Minister Matthew Guy to extend urban boundaries into protected green wedge-zoned land.
Mornington Peninsula Council mayor Graham Pittock said there was no way the green wedge boundaries would be changed.
“Mornington Peninsula Shire is very firm on keeping the boundaries where they are,” Cr Pittock said.
“It’s the one thing we are all agreed on - we have to maintain our green wedge.”
Cr Pittock said the amenity of the entire peninsula depended on the green wedge.
“We don’t want urban sprawl coming down here. We are still the lungs of Melbourne and we want it to stay that way,” he said.
Cr Pittock made the comments after Mr Guy told the Leader he would write to councils, giving them the chance to expand to meet increasing demand for housing.
“Any changes outside of growth areas should be a council decision,” Mr Guy said. “Councils (outside of growth areas) will soon be invited to make submissions ... should they choose to make any changes.”
The Bracks Labor Government introduced the Green Wedge Protection Act in 2003. “I am not directing any boundary change and no council is being forced to have any movement should they not want it,” Mr Guy said.
