Shire toll among worst

YARRA Ranges has earned the dubious honour of being named one of the state's worst areas for road trauma, as Victoria Police embarked on a new strategy to bring down the road toll.

Ten people - about the area's yearly average - have died in the shire so far this year. When Operation Ardent was launched last week, Yarra Ranges was one of 10 areas identified as responsible for 40 per cent of the state's road trauma.

"We know that young people are over-represented in road trauma statistics, so by being upfront with information via a service like Twitter, police hope that young drivers will take more notice of road safety messages."
