Planning permits abolished for small lots

Victorian Planning Minister Matthew Guy says changes to planning permits will make home ownership accessible to more people.

Mr Guy has announced the abolition of planning permits for housing blocks of less than 300 square metres as long as they meet minimum building standards.
He says this will cut red tape and encourage building on smaller lots in Melbourne's growth areas, such as Whittlesea, Melton and Werribee.

"That will cut $40,000 to $50,000 off the cost of a new home for those smaller homes in our growth areas and hopefully give people who can't afford to build or buy a bigger house, the chance to buy a smaller one," he said.
He says the move cuts red tape.

"It's an incentive for people to get into home ownership, whether they're in a smaller or larger home," he said.
"It gives people the chance to own a home in a growth area much sooner than would have been the case."

Building permits establish, maintain and improve standards for the construction and maintenance of buildings. Permits also enhance the amenity of buildings and protect people using them.
